A 17th-century English antique oak panelled coffer or chest.
Peg-joined construction.
With its original plank top over a carved apron bearing the date of "1676", with two panels below, each carved with a geometric design. Supported overall on raised stile feet.
Condition - This coffer has a lovely skin/patination. It has taken pride of place in a house in Market Harborough, Leicestershire, for the last fifty years and has been well-loved and well-used by the family until recently. Down-sizing has forced the family to sell.
The remains of the original wire hinges can be found but have been supported with the addition of two later hinges. The underside of the plank top has been strengthened with three batons. A later lock and keep have been fitted too.
The internal till (candle box) has long since been missing. Externally, the front left panel is missing its cock beading to the outer edge. Again this is an age-related loss and does not detract overall from the chest which still displays very well. Please refer to the images for further information.
