A beautifully patinated two-part court cupboard dating from the late 1600s — a rare survivor of English vernacular furniture, steeped in centuries of domestic tradition. Measuring 158cm tall, 145cm wide, and 60cm deep, this charming oak piece offers both presence and practicality.
The cupboard features the characteristic drop pendants at each end of the moulded pediment, and deep recessed fielded panels to both upper and lower sections, with two doors below and two above — each retaining its original blacksmith-forged iron hinges. The surface is richly worn, with a warm, tactile patina that speaks of generations of use.
Historically, court cupboards were central to the household, serving as both storage and display. The upper tier would have showcased prized pewter, textiles, or ceremonial items, while the lower section stored provisions and household goods. This piece likely stood in a well-appointed hall or parlour, reflecting the status and prosperity of its original owners during the late Stuart period.
A fine example of 17th-century craftsmanship, this cupboard offers collectors and decorators alike a tangible link to Britain’s domestic past — where form, function, and heritage meet.
Provenance: England. 17th-Century.
Material: Oak and iron.
Condition: Worn with a good patina. The handles have been replaced historically with turned yew wood knobs. There is a slight age related loss to the bottom front left plinth base where it meets the left stile. We believe this should be left as it it is to maintain the originality of the piece. All joints are stable. Original backboards. Please review the images for further information.
