A 17thC English antique oak boarded box. Also referred to as a bible box.
Plank and nailed construction.
The rectangular top with a moulded edge above a carved front with a single lock plate. The carving incorporates stylised scrolls and initials "IH" to the centre. The end boards and back board are of plain form. The base board is finished with a moulded edge.
The lid is joined to the carcass by way of two iron hinges and opens to reveal a compartmentalised interior.
Provenance - Unknown
Condition - Please refer to the images. In good, solid condition. There are general marks and surface wear commensurate with age. The box lacks its hasp. The lock plate appears to be original. Three batons are secured to the underside of the lid providing additional support to the plank top. The baseboard has some age-related losses to its front edge where it is proud of the front board.
