An imposing 17th-century carved oak overmantel, the frieze boldly gadrooned beneath a moulded cornice supported by three figural terms — the carved half-figures characteristic of Jacobean and later Stuart joinery at its most architectural. Below, a pair of arched panels carved with floral designs, the arcading flanked and divided by guilloche-carved terms, the whole presenting the rich, sculptural facade that made the overmantel the centrepiece of the 17th-century great chamber and parlour.
The carving is vigorous and deeply worked, the oak with good colour and age throughout. As with a great many overmantels of this period, the piece has led more than one life: at some point in its history it was adapted into another item of furniture — probably a court cupboard — before being returned to its original overmantel form. Such alterations are entirely typical of early oak, which was valued, reused, and remade across generations, and the structural history is disclosed here fully; the carved elements themselves are of good 17th-century quality.
An architectural statement of real presence — above a fireplace as intended, as a headboard, or mounted as a decorative panel in a hall or dining room of a period property.
Provenance: England. 17th-century.
Material: Oak.
Condition: Good overall order; old worm; surface wear commensurate with age; historic alterations as described above, disclosed in full.
Dimensions: Width: 54¼ in (138 cm); Height: 24¾ in (63 cm)
