This large and handsome seventeenth-century Continental brass bowl, probably from the Low Countries or Germany, is raised by hand from a single sheet of brass.
It is of broad, shallow form with gently flaring sides, and the rim is rolled for strength and comfort in handling. There are no seams and no separately applied base. The whole bowl was worked up from one disc of metal with the hammer, a demanding technique that leaves the characteristic, softly rippling hammer marks visible across the surface and catching the light.
Large brass basins of this kind were among the essential vessels of the seventeenth-century household. They were used in the dairy for setting milk, in the kitchen for preparation and in the household for washing. Brass was prized for its durability and for the ease with which it could be scoured clean. The brassworkers of the Low Countries and southern Germany were the great suppliers of such wares across Europe, and their basins appear again and again in the Dutch genre paintings of the period.
At nearly 20 inches across, this is a bowl of real presence. Polished as it is, it would make a glowing centrepiece on a dining or kitchen table, a dramatic fruit bowl, or a striking display piece in a period interior.
Provenance: European - Germany or the Low Countries. 17th century.
Material: Hand-raised brass.
Condition: Good. The exterior and interior have been polished. Hammer marks are visible throughout, and the rim is rolled. There is wear, small dents, and darker marks to the centre of the interior consistent with age and use. Please refer to the images.
