An antique bronze three-legged cooking pot or small cauldron. Also known as a "Grapen" in German.
These cooking pots were popualr between the 13th and 17th-centuries with bronze examples found in Western European and British kitchens of the period. Influenced by a traditional earthenware cooking pot known as a "pipkin", used for cooking over direct heat from coals or a wood fire, often with three legs to sit on the embers, making it a common utensil in medieval and post medieval cooking.
This example is of Continental origin. Bearing a date of "1671" with an unidentified armorial below.
The pot has three splayed feet and a carry-handle.
The pot was placed in the hot embers of the hearth over night. Carrots, onions, potatoes and meat were added. The result was a nice warm breakfast stew for the following morning.
Provenance - Unknown.
Condition - The pot is in exceptional condition with no damage aside age-related surface wear. Please refer to the images.
Size - 13 cm (5")
