This late 17th‑century faience albarello apothecary jar is decorated in blue foliate scrolls on a pale tin‑glazed ground, with a central label reading “PILL: ASARICOTROCSICA” — a longer, more specific form of the medicinal term asaric. The inscription refers to Pillulae Asarici Trochisci, a compounded pharmaceutical preparation made from asarabacca (Asarum europaeum), a potent herb used historically as a purgative and emetic.
In early European pharmacy, asarabacca was valued for its ability to “cleanse the head and stomach,” and preparations such as pillulae asarici or trochisci asarici were common in apothecary inventories. Jars like this one stored the dried ingredients or finished pills, clearly labelled to avoid confusion with other strong remedies.
The jar’s cylindrical form with slightly flared base and rim is typical of 17th‑century albarelli, and the hand‑painted decoration — scrolling leaves, stylised flowers, and a bold cartouche — reflects the majolica traditions of European Countries. The glaze has softened beautifully with age, and the jar retains the tactile charm and authenticity expected of genuine early pharmacy ware.
A rare and evocative survivor of historic medical practice, combining decorative appeal with real documentary value.
