A fine and complete example of an early domestic grease lamp, retaining its original twisted iron trammel chain, forged suspension links, and a hook. The lamp itself is of the characteristic four-pointed star or quatrefoil form, the shallow open reservoir beaten from a single sheet of wrought iron, each corner drawn out to a projecting wick spout. The surface throughout has mellowed to a warm, deep russet patina entirely consistent with great age and long use.
The suspension assembly is particularly noteworthy. The trammel chain is formed from hand-twisted iron wire with individually forged connecting links, the whole terminating above in a hanging hook of neat execution.
Such lamps, burning tallow or vegetable oil with rush or fibre wicks, were the primary source of artificial light in English farmhouses and cottages from the medieval period through to the early eighteenth century. Examples retaining their original hanging ironwork are considerably scarcer than the lamps alone.
Provenance: English or Northern European, circa 1650–1750.
