This good 16th‑century English pewter plate is a well‑preserved example of early domestic metalware, with the characteristic broad rim and shallow well associated with Tudor and early Elizabethan table settings. The surface shows the soft, even wear expected of a plate that has seen long service, with a gentle dish to the centre and a pleasing, naturally aged patina. The rim is subtly raised and slightly everted, a form typical of mid‑16th‑century English pewter.
Plates of this period were used daily in prosperous households, often stacked or stored on open dressers where their muted sheen contributed to the visual richness of the room. Surviving examples in honest, undisturbed condition are increasingly scarce, as many were melted down or re‑worked in later centuries. This plate retains its integrity, with no later decoration or intrusive restoration, and displays beautifully either wall‑mounted or laid flat.
A fine and evocative piece of Tudor‑period pewter, carrying the quiet authority of genuine early English metalwork.
