A beautifully carved late 16th‑century Renaissance walnut angel, depicted with a serene, human‑like face and broad, outstretched wings. Carved from a single block of walnut, the figure displays the hallmarks of late Renaissance craftsmanship: deeply modelled feathering, softly rounded facial planes, and a confident sense of symmetry.
Originally part of a larger ecclesiastical or architectural ensemble, this angel would likely have adorned a choir stall, altarpiece, or devotional surround, serving both decorative and symbolic functions. The sculptor has captured a gentle, uplifting expression, typical of Northern European Renaissance carving, where angels were rendered as intermediaries between the earthly and the divine.
The walnut has been overpainted with a darker stain and has developed a mellow patina, with traces of age‑related wear consistent with centuries of devotional use. The carving remains crisp, particularly in the feathering of the wings and the contours of the face.
A striking and highly decorative fragment, ideal for wall display or incorporation into an interior scheme that values historic texture and sculptural presence.

Condition: Solid and stable. Expected minor surface wear and patina from age - especially the tip of his nose. No active worm. Small historic losses to extremities consistent with period carving.
