A 16th-Century marriage casket / table top box of small proportions.
French origin.
Of six-plank construction.
The plank lid over a front carved with two "romayne" portrait panels, depicting a married couple. The portrait to the left portrays a man wearing an armoured helmet, the right portrays his spouse. The centre has its original lock plate with a functioning lock and key. The box has an iron carry handle at each end and retains its original iron strap hinges. The lid opens to reveal an interior fitted with a till.
Supported overall on four ball feet.
