An early English School antique oil on wood panel portrait of William Waynflete.
Thought to be late 16th Century in date.
Unsigned and despite its slight naivity, the portrait is clearly influenced by/ in the manner of Hans Holbein (1497/1498-1546)
The portrait bears the Coat of Arms to the top left corner of William Waynflete: Lozengy ermine and sable, on a chief of the second three lilies argent. The sitter depicted as head and part-torso wearing period attire.
William Waynflete (c.1398 – 11 August 1486), born William Patten, was Provost of Eton College (1442–1447),Bishop of Winchester (1447-1486)and Lord Chancellor of England (1456-1460). He founded Magdalen College, Oxford, and three subsidiary schools, name Magdalen College School, Oxford, Magdalen School Brackley, Northamptonshire and Wainfleet All Saints, Lincolnshire.
Presented in a traditional antique ebonised wooden frame.
Provenance: Previously the property of a former museum curator, collected between the 1930's and 1970's. The portrait retains part of and collection label verso.
Condition: Good overall as per the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
