This is a fragment of an orphrey band — the decorative embroidered strip applied to vestments, most commonly a cope, chasuble, or dalmatic. Orphrey bands were the most prestigious form of medieval textile art, combining silk, silver-gilt, and silver thread in highly skilled needlework. English medieval embroidery of this type was so celebrated across Europe it was known as Opus Anglicanum — English Work.

The figure style, oval mandorla-shaped surrounds, crimson velvet ground, and the combination of silk and metal thread work point to the late 16th to early 17th century — the post-Reformation period. The somewhat naive but expressive faces and the foliate decoration are consistent with Elizabethan or early Stuart embroidery rather than the more refined earlier medieval tradition.

Two saints or apostles are depicted in individual oval frames, each holding attributes. One figure appears to hold an open book — consistent with an Evangelist or a Doctor of the Church. The other figure (a bishop saint) appears to hold a staff and possibly a palm — potentially St Paul or a martyr saint. The central panel between the two figures shows a chalice beneath a canopy — possibly an Eucharistic symbol.

Provenance: England. Late 16th-Century / Early 17th-Century.

Material: Crimson silk velvet has been used as the ground with silver-gilt and silver thread couching, with silk thread for flesh tones and costume detail. The foliate scrollwork between figures is worked in metal thread throughout.

Condition: Predictably fragile — thread loss, velvet crushing, and some separation of panels. Nonetheless, the figural embroidery retains remarkable colour and definition.

Dimensions: Length approx 60 cm (23.62 in) x Width 9 cm (3.54 cm)
