An early 16th-century Gothic antique carved wooden sculpture of The Virgin of Calvary.
Continental origin.
Possibly carved from limewood.
This sculpture of The Virgin of Calvary probably formed part of a larger figure group depicting the Crucifixion. The Virgin would usually be accompanied by a sculpture of the apostle John and possily the two other Marys' - Mary of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. They would all flank Christ on the Cross.
The portrayal of Christ on the Cross and The Virgin had to be a touching and moving scene to the observer.
Mary, portrayed in humble pose, is standing with her head slightly tilted back to her right shoulder, her hands clasped in prayer. Her eyes are open wide with sadness and her mouth is slightly open.
She wears a full length robe, her head covered with a veil.
Provenance - Unknown.
