A richly carved late 16th–early 17th‑century oak figural panel depicting Fortitude (Fortitudo), one of the Cardinal Virtues. The figure stands in composed stillness, her left hand raised to the chest in a gesture of moral resolve, while her right hand holds a cat — an exceptionally unusual and symbolically charged detail.
In early modern iconography, the cat embodies watchfulness, domestic guardianship, independence, and steadfast inner strength. When placed directly in the hand of a Virtue, it becomes a deliberate emblem: a creature associated with vigilance and self‑possession, reinforcing the moral fortitude she represents. This intimate handling of the animal elevates the carving beyond simple decoration, signalling a workshop confident in both allegory and narrative nuance.
Panels of this type once formed part of larger architectural schemes — domestic wall panelling, cupboard doors, or the decorative fronts of marriage chests. Surviving examples with such clear iconography, strong figural modelling, and secondary symbolic elements are increasingly scarce. This piece retains a deep, honest patina enriched by centuries of handling, smoke, and candlelit interiors.
A superb decorative fragment with real sculptural and symbolic weight, ideal for collectors of early oak, students of iconography, or anyone seeking a single statement piece with genuine age and character.
Provenance: France. Late 16th Century / early 17th century.
Material: Oak.
Condition: Please refer to the images. The figure is in good order itself; however, the back panel shows signs of old worm damage to the top right (top left of the panel when viewed face on) and some wear and old worm to the right edge. This is historic and inactive. It has been treated as a precautionary measure. The panel displays well.
