A fine and well-patinated brass candlestick of bell-based form, made in Nuremberg in the early seventeenth century, the great centre of European brass production whose wares were exported across the Continent.
The cylindrical sconce with everted rim sits above a vasiform baluster stem incised with girdle lines, over a wide circular mid-drip pan and a spreading bell-shaped foot with concentric ring-turned mouldings. Of characteristic sectional construction, the separately turned elements united by a central tang attached to the base — entirely as expected for the type and period.
Candlesticks of this pattern travelled far from their Franconian workshops, and many survive in Spanish and Italian churches and households, where they are frequently — and mistakenly — attributed to those countries. The present example carries a deep, unimproved olive-brown patina developed over four centuries, with honest wear to the foot rim and drip pan.
A handsome and sculptural survivor of early modern domestic lighting, equally at home on an oak table, mantel, or sideboard.
Provenance: Nuremberg, Germany. Early 17th-century.
Material: Well-patinated brass.
Condition: In fine original condition commensurate with age. Deep untouched patina throughout. Minor residue to the sconce interior. Structurally sound and stable.
