A wonderfully evocative 16th‑century English alms box, formerly of Arley Church, Worcestershire, retaining its original iron fittings, hand‑cut joinery, and rare period graffiti. Made from thick, darkened timber with a hinged lid and an iron hasp, this is a superb example of early parish furniture — functional, symbolic, and deeply rooted in the devotional life of its community.
The side panels bear historic script and markings, applied by hand in the period and softened by centuries of wear. These inscriptions are part of the box’s long ecclesiastical life: names, initials, or devotional notes left by parishioners or wardens. The surface has developed a rich, untouched patina, with the kind of dry, honest texture that only genuine 16th‑century timber acquires.
Compact, characterful, and full of narrative presence, this is a rare survival from an English parish interior — a piece that once held offerings, dues, or charitable alms.
Historical Background: Alms Boxes in the 16th Century
During the 1500s, parish churches across England used alms boxes to collect:
Charitable donations
Offerings for the poor
Parish dues
Contributions for church maintenance
These boxes were often fixed near the entrance or beside the nave, where parishioners could deposit coins discreetly. Many were simple, robust constructions with iron hasps for security. Surviving examples with period inscriptions are particularly desirable, as they offer a direct human connection to the individuals who used them.
Provenance: Probably European in origin. 16th-century. Ex‑Arley Church, Worcestershire. Previously sold by Marham Church Antiques to a private UK‑based collection several years ago. Excellent, traceable ecclesiastical provenance — increasingly scarce in the market.
