A striking 16th–17th‑century brass alms dish, attributed to the celebrated Nuremberg workshops, renowned across Europe for their high‑quality brass casting and repoussé work. This example features a beautifully defined central scene of Adam and Eve flanking the Tree of Knowledge, its trunk entwined with the serpent. This scene is surrounded by a series of concentric hammered/repoussé-worked rings that catch the light superbly.
The dish is worked in bold relief, with crisp modelling to the figures and a warm, golden surface enriched by centuries of handling. The broad rim is gently dished and displays the characteristic hammered texture associated with Nuremberg production. These large, decorative brass dishes were used both liturgically and domestically, often displayed prominently as symbols of status and craftsmanship.
A highly decorative and well‑preserved example with excellent presence — ideal for wall display or as part of a collection of early brassware.
Provenance: Attributed to Nuremberg, Germany. 16th-17th-century.
Material: Repoussé-worked brass.
Condition: Age-related wear. Rich, even patina. There are several small holes in the surface where the metal has thinned due to extensive polishing over time. Our price reflects this.
