This finely crafted Gothic box is a faithful 11th-century style copy inspired by one of Spain’s most storied artefacts: the coffer of El Cid. According to medieval chronicles, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar—El Cid Campeador—entrusted a chest to two Jewish merchants in Burgos as part of a legendary exchange. The original coffer, bound in iron and steeped in myth, symbolised both the ingenuity and the precarious fortunes of Spain’s Golden Age.
Our example, though smaller in scale, echoes the same Iberian tradition of riveted iron straps, hand-forged bindings, and rustic Gothic form. It evokes the monastic and domestic storage chests of the period, while carrying the aura of the famed El Cid coffer—an object that bridged cultures, commerce, and legend.
Provenance: Spain. 11th-century style. Probably made in the 20th century. A museum-grade reproduction that connects collectors to Spain’s medieval narrative.
