15th-Century Life-Size Antique Carved Stone Head of a Saint

A carved limestone head of a saint, Spanish School, 14th-15th century. The stone is worked with a serene, gently inclined expression, the deeply carved eyes and softly modelled features characteristic of Gothic ecclesiastical statuary of the period, when such heads formed part of larger figures set within church portals, tombs or retable niches. Fragments of this kind typically survive as the sole remnant of a full-length saint or apostle figure, the body lost to the depredations of time, iconoclasm, or 19th and 20th-century architectural clearance.
Later-mounted on a 20th-century marble, or similar hardstone, block, solid and of considerable weight.
Provenance: Spain. 14th-15th-century.
Material: Limestone.
Condition: Please refer to the images. Old wear and surface erosion to the limestone consistent with age.
Dimensions: 8¼in x 5⅞in x 7⅞in (21 x 15 x 20cm); 18½in (47cm) high overall with block.
