A joined oak coffer front dating back to the mid-to-late 15th-century.
French origin.
With its original lock plate mounted on a plain top rail. Below, there are five carved oak panels. The centre panel is carved with stylised finials over a quatrefoil, flanked at all four corners with a naive leaf and bud design. Below, four lancets complete the pattern.
Flanking the centre panel at each side are two elongated panels with columns incorporating geometric designs. These are very reminiscent of the gothic decorated columns seen in Norman churches of the period.
This coffer front would make an ideal overmantle or headboard or just as a decorative wall hanging in its own right.
Provenance - Sourced within East Anglia, Norfolk, England. Originally found in a seller of a large country house within the locality.
Condition.- Dry untouched surface. Please refer to the images. Traces of old worm. Inactive and treated as a precautionary measure. Significant surface wear. The bottom rail appears to be a later replacement albeit it appears to be historic in its own right. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
