15th Century English Antique Oak Ceiling Boss, Most Probably depicting a Manticore
A late 15thC English antique carved oak ceiling boss possibly depicting a "Manticore" set within a roundel.
The Manticore originated in Middle Persia but also became prolific in Western Medieval art. With a human head, lion's body and tail of a scorpion or similar to that of a porcupine, it was reputed that the darts from the tail could be fired like lethal arrows making it an accomplished predator.
Condition - There is surface wear commensurate with age and a loss to the right side. Please refer to the images. This panel displays very well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
