15th-Century English Gothic Antique Carved Wooden Sculptural Fragment Depicting A Mythical "Harpy"

A captivating fragment of late medieval English woodcarving, this piece depicts a harpy - a mythological creature combining the body of a bird with the head and torso of a woman. Rich in allegorical symbolism, harpies were often used in ecclesiastical and heraldic contexts to represent temptation, divine retribution, or the duality of beauty and danger.

This wooden figure, carved in deep relief from wood (possibly pine/deal), is rendered with stylized plumage and a serene, enigmatic expression. The craftsmanship suggests a skilled hand, likely intended for architectural ornamentation or ecclesiastical furnishing. Despite its fragmentary nature, the carving retains strong visual impact and narrative presence.

The piece is housed in a simple contemporary frame that complements its historical character without distraction.

Provenance - Unknown.

Condition - Repaired - Please refer to the images. The carving has been broken historically into a number of pieces, which have been reconnected (the repairs have been left to show that the piece has seen many centuries of wear and tear!). It has been re-gilded at some point albeit sensitively undertaken to match the original worn colour. The carving has been naively screwed to the backboard of the frame by way of three screws. All-in-all, despite its condition, it is a rare find.
