A finely carved oak misericord dating to the 15th century. The carving retains excellent depth and definition with a mix of stylised leaves and geometric designs, with rich patina acquired over centuries. Misericords are among the most evocative survivals of medieval ecclesiastical furniture, blending artistry with liturgical function.

This example would once have formed part of a choir stall, providing discreet support to clergy during long services. The craftsmanship reflects the Gothic tradition, where sacred utility was elevated by imaginative carving. Today, such pieces are treasured not only for their devotional heritage but also for their ability to connect collectors with the lived experience of medieval worship.

Background & History of Misericords

Definition: A misericord (from the Latin misericordia, meaning “act of mercy”) is a small ledge or bracket on the underside of a folding choir stall seat. When the seat was tipped up, the ledge offered subtle support to clergy obliged to stand for extended periods.

Origins: First appearing in the 11th–12th centuries, misericords became widespread in Gothic church architecture from the 13th century onward.

Function: They were practical aids during the Divine Office, but their carvings often carried secular, humorous, or moralizing themes — ranging from biblical scenes to fantastical beasts and everyday life.

Artistic Value: Misericords are celebrated for their imaginative iconography, offering a rare glimpse into medieval humor and social commentary within a sacred setting.

Survival: Many were lost during the Reformation reforms, making intact examples highly desirable to collectors and institutions today.

Provenance: France: Late 15th Century. Acquired by us from a private Norfolk-based collection.
