A powerful and evocative 15th‑century carved oak hammerbeam figurehead, originally part of a medieval roof structure. Carvings of this type once projected from the ends of hammerbeams in great halls, churches, and high‑status buildings, serving both a structural and symbolic role. They were designed to be seen from below, their expressive faces and flowing drapery animating the timbered interiors of late medieval England.

This example is carved from dense, time‑darkened oak, with traces of its original medieval shaping still visible in the modelling of the face, hair, and drapery. The figure’s forward‑leaning posture and stylised features are typical of Perpendicular Gothic carving, where architectural sculpture was intended to convey presence, guardianship, and spiritual resonance.

The surface has developed a deep, tactile patina over more than five centuries, with areas of wear, softening, and age‑related losses entirely consistent with its survival as an architectural fragment. Medieval figureheads of this scale and integrity are increasingly scarce, especially those retaining such strong character and sculptural presence.

A compelling piece of medieval woodcarving, rich with atmosphere and carrying the unmistakable gravitas of the late Middle Ages.

Provenance: France, Germany, or the Low Countries (Belgium/Netherlands). 15th century.

Typical of the period is its Gothic-style drapery with deeply carved, flowing folds. Likely used as an architectural element (corbel) to support roof beams in churches, manor houses, or guild halls. The carving style and proportions are consistent with late medieval ecclesiastical or domestic architecture.

These corbels were common decorative and structural elements in medieval buildings. The figure's robes and hand positioning suggest religious iconography, which was standard for church interiors during this period.

Material: Weathered oak or similar hardwood with age-appropriate patina and wear.

Condition: Weathered oak or similar hardwood with age-appropriate patina and wear. Deep, natural patina. Structurally stable. Photos show the actual item.

Dimensions: Length x Width x Depth

A haunting survivor of the medieval period — carved to watch over a great hall, and still radiating its centuries‑old presence.
