An early 18th-century English antique sandstone sundial dated "1710", supported on an associated base of earlier date, thought to be an original Roman altar stone with a naïvely carved figure of a man.
The dial plate is crisply incised with hour lines and numerals, its surface weathered yet legible. The base, with its primitive carving, adds archaeological depth and visual intrigue. Together, they form a layered historical composition spanning centuries.
This evocative piece may once have stood in a garden, cloister, or estate courtyard. It now offers sculptural presence and scholarly appeal — a poetic survivor from the Georgian period, anchored in classical antiquity.
Provenance: Attributed to the West Country, UK. Acquired from the garden of a property in Norwich.
