A large and impressive mid 17th-century English antique bronze mortar. Please note that no pestle is included with the sale.
Michael Finlay's book, "English Decorated Bronze Mortars & Their Makers", attributes this design of mortar to the London "Unidentified" Foundry. An identical example is illustrated in his book, Page 81, Plate 36. Two examples of of this type are held in private collections including (1l the John Farndon Collection (albeit that example is slightly smaller) and (2) The Wellcome Collection where the latter example is identical in size to our stock item.
Our example has a flared rim, the body with two lugs/carry handles and it is cast four times with a large flower motif. Supported on a stepped circular foot.
Provenance - Sourced directly from a private Norfolk-based collection.
