A pair of 18th-Century English antique embossed leather plaques of oval form.
Both featuring a stag passant or trippant stag (the terns in heraldy used to describe a stag moving forward with three hooves on the ground, the forth raised) with a woodland setting in the background. The plaques are edged with a decorative border incorporating embossed interlocking lines infilled with various decorative forms.
It is most probable that these plaques once formed decorative adornments to the back supports of chairs, now, sadly, long since lost.
Provenance - Found in Yorkshire, England, close to Helmsley.
