An exceptionally rare 17th Century English antique tobacco sign.

A similar example sold at Lyon and Turnbull Edinburgh, Lot 64, The Beal House Sale, 14th October 2020 but was lacking its wooden signed base.

Carved from a single piece of timber, the upright figure depicted as a blackamoor in a stylised tobacco leaf tribal headdress and tobacco leaf skirt, his chest with medallion, his right arm outstretched, and his left holding a bundle of tobacco leaves.

The base inscribed with the words "cigar", "tobacco" and "snuff".

Verso is the original iron-hanging bracket.

In original polychromy.

Size 63.5cm (25").

Condition - as per images. Good overall. There is a very minor loss to the underside of a finger of his right hand and the feet have been re-joined at the ankles

however this does not have any detrimental effect on the sculpture which displays incredibly well.
