A rare late 16thC / early 17thC carved antique chestnut sculpture of Joseph of Nazareth, husband of Mary and adopted father of Jesus, depicted as a carpenter holding his box plane.

Continental origin.

It is widely thought that Joseph would have been 44-45 at the time of Christ's birth. It is therefore unusual to find him depicted in older life.

Since Joseph is not mentioned during the public ministry of Jesus, most scholars assume he died sometime between the twelve-year-old temple account (8-12 AD) and when Jesus began his public ministry around 27-29 AD "at about 30 years of age".  Joseph would have been in his 70's at this point.

The carving depicts a father tired and worried for his son, worn down with work and the prospect of his son's future.

Condition - as per the images. This figure displays very well.
