A mid-17thC English antique oak coffer of joined construction.

The lid carved with a naive head and shoulders portrait of Oliver Cromwell and below, inscribed "Oliver Cromwell 1653" wielding a sword and battle-axe with a rampant lion embossed on his chest.

The date signifies where Cromwell used the Army to disband the Rump Parliament in 1653, irritated by its self-serving interests and slowness in developing solutions for the Commonwealth. In the process, he became Lord Protector in December of that year until his death in September 1658.

The front of the coffer comprises a plain apron over two panels, each carved with a decorative lozenge surrounded with "s" scrolls. The sides are plain. Supported overall.on raised stile feet. The lid opens to reveal a void interior. The underside of the lid has been scratch-carved with the initials "MF".

Provenance - Sourced privately within East Anglia from a private Suffolk-based collection.

Condition - Of sound construction. Lovely colour and patination. A cleat (baton) is missing from the right side edge of the lid. We believe that this should be left "as found" given the loss is historic. The hinges have been replaced historically. The till is missing internally. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size - Width 97.8 cm x Height 70 cm x Depth 53.3 cm (38 1/2" x 27 1/2" x 21")
