A wonderful English antique oak coffer dating back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Of peg-joined construction.

Attributed to Leeds, Yorkshire, England.

The four panelled lid with carved nulled decoration over a supporting apron inlaid with a decorative pattern of bog oak and holly and an iron escutcheon, with a triple-fielded panelled front, each with a geometric design and again incorporating bog oak and holly inlay.

The frame to the front and sides also incorporates the same decorative inlaid timbers and nulling.

Supported overall on raised stile feet.

The lid is joined to the carcass by way of hand forged iron hinges.

The lid opens to reveal an interior fitted with its original till. The lid to the till is not fixed. It simply slides / lifts off.

Provenance - Ex-private collection close to Carlisle, United Kingdom.

Condition - Excellent patination/good colour to the surface skin. All joints are sound. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
