A Very Large Early 17thC Jacobean Period English Antique Carved Oak Panel

A very large and fine early 17thC Jacobean Period antique carved oak panel of English origin, circa 1603-1625, in excess of 2ft square.

Depicting a gentleman to the centre in period attire, flanked by columns with an arch above, and set within a larger arcaded frieze enriched with geometric carving and stylised foliate spandrels to the upper corners. The outer border is again decorated with geometric carving to all four sides.

Presented, overall, in a bespoke-made oak box frame of lighter colour as a contrast to the panel. No expense was spared on the box frame as its construction is of a very high quality including nicely finished dove-tailed joints.

Provenance - This panel once formed part of the headboard to a tester bed. There was, apparently, a second panel depicting a female figure (most probably the gentleman's spouse) but sadly the pair were broken up in 1972, when this piece was acquired from an antiques shop, based in Knightsbridge, London, England, by the previous owner. This panel has remained in the same private collection for the last 51 years, from 1972 until 2023. Holt Antiques at Walsingham Mill has been fortunate to source this panel and offer it for sale to the open market.
