A pair of late 18th Century English antique coconut cups.

Each, formed from the polished shell of a coconut, is supported on a raised brass foot, formed as an inverted flower, with a knopped stem. The foot of each is "loaded" (filled with sand) to provide extra stability.

Note - Drinking vessels formed from the coconut were prized in early times for their healing powers. The coconut cup is a variety of standing cup, made and used in Europe in the 15th-17th Century, with a revival in Georgian England. Usually they have a pedestal foot or 3 ornamental feet and are mounted in silver or Old Sheffield plate. 17th century examples normally had the rim mount joined to the foot mount by three equally spaced vertical straps. It is possible that this pair may have originally been silver plated at their base.

Provenance - Found in Whitby, North Yorkshire, England.

Condition - Please refer to the images. The cup to the left of the images is in perfect condition. The cup to the right has a crack and loss to the rim of the bowl. The cups still display well. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.

Size - Height of left cup 15 cm (5 7/8") / Height of right cup 14.5 cm (5 3/4")
