This tall and elegant 18th‑century Italian pricket candlestick is carved in wood and finished in gilt gesso, standing on three scrolling feet that lift the form with a light, architectural presence. The turned shaft rises to a wooden candleholder fitted with its original iron pricket, a classic feature of Italian ecclesiastical lighting of the period.
The surface has worn beautifully: areas of gilding have thinned or flaked away, revealing the red bole and underlying carving. The result is a wonderfully atmospheric patina — the kind of honest, time‑softened surface that collectors of early giltwood prize. The base and feet show expected knocks, losses, and age‑related imperfections, all consistent with long devotional or domestic use.
Candlesticks of this type were used in chapels, sacristies, and private oratories throughout Italy, where carved and gilded woodwork formed part of the wider Baroque decorative scheme. Today, the combination of height, sculptural form, and distressed gilding makes this a striking decorative piece for both period and contemporary interiors.
