An early 18thC Italian antique panel depicting the Virgin and Child flanked by angels to the upper corner spandrels.
Formed from "Cartapesta", this panel was probably made around the area of Lecce, Italy, where the making of Cartapesta (papier-mache) originated in the 17thC.
As a cheaper alternative to stone, or wood-carving and, considerably lighter too, Italian craftsmen developed their skills to make religious items to decorate the churches in quicker time than it would take to make the same piece in alternative materials.
This fine example that we offer for sale retains its original polychromy.
Provenance - Sourced directly from a private Italian-based collection.
Condition - as per the images. In good order overall. The panel is backed on to its original pine backboard. The panel displays well and has presence given its overall size. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
