Pinto, in his book of "Treen and Other Wooden Bygones", Page 89 and Plate 84, attributes these turned elm wooden bowls to one Sussex-based farmhouse. Approx 60 "log bowls" approx 3" in height were made but sadly dispersed over a period of time.
He writes that the shape of these bowls is very rare for an English form, being more characteristic of the East and Middle East. Bowls of this form are even depicted in Pieter Breughel the Elder's 16th Century peasant paintings.
Opportunities to offer these bowls for sale are few and far between.
Condition - dry surface albeit patinated, with an applied iron hoop to the outer surface. There is evidence that a further hoop may have been attached to the turned wooden foot however this is now missing. Please refer to the images for further details.
