The broad-dished base — the defining feature of the Iberian type — is similarly turned with concentric reeded bands and retains an excellent, untouched surface, mellowed to a warm golden-bronze colour, with areas of old pitting and verdigris on the underside.

Of particular interest is the construction, which is entirely correct for the period: the stem and base were cast separately and united mechanically, the joint secured with peened copper rivets in the seventeenth-century manner. This two-part riveted assembly — often misread as a later alteration — is in fact a key diagnostic of authenticity, pre-dating the threaded fixings of later reproductions. Small copper plugs to the base, filling minor casting flaws at the time of manufacture, are likewise typical of period foundry practice. An old brass-solder repair to the rim of the base speaks to a long working life; wax residue and verdigris remain within the socket.

Candlesticks of this pattern were produced throughout Spain and Italy in the seventeenth century and appear frequently in Golden Age still-life and interior painting. Survivors in honest, unrestored condition are increasingly difficult to find.

A characterful and displayable piece of early lighting, equally at home on an oak court cupboard, a refectory table, or as a statement piece in a period interior.

Provenance: Spain.
