Before the articulated artificial limbs of the later Victorian period, a peg of this kind was the common lot of the amputee, whether soldier, sailor or labourer. Few survive. A peg leg was worn until it failed, and was seldom kept once its owner had gone.

The deep conical socket is hollowed from the solid timber. Its rim is cut obliquely, falling away on the inner side to clear the groin, which is the mark of a maker who understood the body he was fitting. Leather tabs carrying hand-forged iron buckles and loops are riveted to either side of the rim to take the harness. The socket tapers in a long, sculptural sweep to a slender peg, and the foot is shod with a thick leather pad held by four hand-wrought nails. That pad has been worn, compressed, and cracked by years of walking.

The leg’s character lies above all in its accretion of repairs, each a small record of the life it served. Hand-forged iron straps bind the socket against splitting, and further short straps have been nailed across individual cracks. A leather patch is tacked over a fissure in the shaft, and twin iron bands reinforce the lower peg. It is almost certainly the work of a village carpenter, wheelwright or smith rather than a surgical instrument maker. It is as eloquent a piece of vernacular sculpture as it is a document of medical history.

Provenance: England. Late 18th-century. Acquired locally in Norfolk. A similar, but later example, is held in the collection of the Science Museum, London.

Material: Carved timber, probably willow, with hand-forged iron straps, buckles and nails, and leather tabs, patch and foot pad.

Condition: Extensive old splits and shrinkage cracks throughout, including a through-split in the socket, as expected; this is stable and historically stabilised by period iron and leather repairs. The iron straps and fittings are oxidised, and the harness leathers are dry and cracked. The leather foot pad is heavily worn, consistent with long use. The socket interior is darkened and smoothed through wear and sold as found, unrestored.
