Despite the losses of five centuries, it keeps the serene, inward expression of its period.

The face is a smooth, gently full ovoid with a high, open brow. Finely arched lids lie over heavy, almond-shaped eyes. The nose is straight, and the small closed mouth lifts at the corners into the faintest smile. The flesh is finished with the rasp, and the fine striations are still visible across the forehead.

The hair is bound by a narrow fillet, knotted above the brow. Below it the locks break into sinuous, deeply undercut curls that roll about the temples and gather in a thick bank at the nape. At the crown and reverse the carving changes to shallower incised strands radiating from a whorl. This economy is telling: the figure must have stood in a niche or against an architectural ground, meant to be seen mainly from the front and sides.

The contrast between the hair and the face is what places the head. The hair is wholly Gothic in its calligraphic movement, while the face has a calm, classicising regularity. That pairing is the signature of the sculpture made in southern Champagne in the first decades of the sixteenth century, the so-called beau XVIe siècle. Its workshops, centred on Troyes, took a new and gentle Italianate naturalism into a tradition that was still essentially late Gothic. The sweetness of expression, the soft modelling about the eyes and mouth, and the measured idealisation of the features all fit that milieu. A comparable head of similar scale, made in Troyes c.1500 in limestone with traces of polychromy, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (1987.442.3).

At 3¾ in., the head suggests a complete figure of roughly 24–30 in. (60–75 cm). That fits a small standing devotional statue or retable figure rather than monumental architectural sculpture. Traces of a white ground in the recesses may be the remains of a preparation for polychromy.

Such fragments, many of them casualties of the Wars of Religion and later the Revolution, have been prized by collectors since the nineteenth century. This is a choice and highly tactile example, ideal for the cabinet, the library shelf or the study desk.

Provenance: France. A fine hairline fissure runs from the hairline down the forehead, with a further line across the left temple and cheek; it appears stable. There are light surface scratches to the left cheek, and residue to the underside. The surface is dry and weathered, with remnants of white ground throughout.
