The socket is fitted with a sliding ejector, operated by a shaped crescent thumb-piece riding in a slot to the stem — a practical Georgian refinement allowing the spent stub to be pushed clear without burnt fingers. The socket is secured beneath the pan by an octagonal brass nut, peened over the central bolt in the pre-industrial manner.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe long, flat, gently tapering handle terminates in a pierced hanging hole. It is fixed to the pan with two substantial hand-hammered copper rivets — honest workshop construction throughout, entirely by hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChambersticks of this form lit the last journey of the day, carried from parlour to bedchamber, the broad pan catching the drips en route.
