It is peg-jointed throughout and has a rich, deep colour and a soft patina built up over two centuries of farmhouse use.

The upper section sits beneath a stepped, moulded cornice. It is enclosed by a pair of tall panelled doors, each with a shaped, arched upper panel of graceful “cupid’s bow” outline above a shorter rectangular panel. The lower section has a further pair of doors, each with two moulded panels. Both pairs of doors open to shelved interiors. The whole stands on bracket feet with boldly shaped spandrels.

The shaped panel heads are the cupboard’s distinguishing feature, and a hallmark of Welsh vernacular joinery in the second half of the eighteenth century. In Wales such refinements were often the only concession to fashion in otherwise robust, practical furniture, made to serve the farmhouse for generations.

The cupboard has generous capacity and an unpretentious elegance. It would serve equally well in a kitchen, hallway, bedroom or library: as a linen press, a pantry, a china store or simply as a commanding piece of early country furniture.

Provenance: Sourced from a private farmhouse near the historic market town of Aylsham, Norfolk, England.

Material: Oak, with iron hinges and brass ring handles and escutcheons.

Condition: Please refer to the images. There are minor traces of historic worm, now inactive, and the piece has been treated as a precaution. There is wear consistent with age and use, notably to the feet, door edges and cornice, and the colour and patina are excellent. The cupboard separates into two sections for ease of moving.
