It was made in the twentieth century, deliberately in the manner of an eighteenth-century turned dish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eIt is of broad, shallow form with a gently rounded rim and a plain band below, the exterior and interior incised with fine turned lines. Its warm, mellow colour and softly worn surface give it the look and feel of a much older piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eThe Swat Valley has a long and distinguished woodworking tradition, rooted in the region’s abundant cedar and hardwood forests. Its turners and carvers have supplied everything from architectural carving to the humblest domestic utensils. Swati turners became particularly adept at reproducing the forms of earlier turned treen, and dishes such as this are now widely found in Western interiors. This example was made to evoke an earlier dish and should be enjoyed as a decorative piece in that spirit, rather than as a period antique.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAt 17 inches across, it has real presence.
