There are no seams and no separately applied base. The whole bowl was worked up from one disc of metal with the hammer, a demanding technique that leaves the characteristic, softly rippling hammer marks visible across the surface and catching the light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eLarge brass basins of this kind were among the essential vessels of the seventeenth-century household. They were used in the dairy for setting milk, in the kitchen for preparation and in the household for washing. Brass was prized for its durability and for the ease with which it could be scoured clean. The brassworkers of the Low Countries and southern Germany were the great suppliers of such wares across Europe, and their basins appear again and again in the Dutch genre paintings of the period.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003eAt nearly 20 inches across, this is a bowl of real presence.
