The chest stands on shaped cut‑away ends, giving it a lightness of stance despite its robust form.

The carving — a sequence of squares and lozenges — is typical of early Tudor and post‑Tudor vernacular work, intended both as ornament and as a symbolic protective device. The surface has developed a rich, dry patina with centuries of handling and use, enhancing the sculptural quality of the front.

This is an honest, early piece of English furniture with real architectural presence, ideal for hallways, living spaces, or as a focal point in a period interior.

Provenance: England. 16th-century in the main, aside from the end boards that have been re-tipped with later timbers. Their straightforward construction — a nailed box with a hinged lid — made them accessible to rural households, while carved examples like this signalled status and pride.

The geometric motifs seen here were widely used from the late medieval period through the 17th century, often believed to carry apotropaic (protective) meaning. These chests served as storage for linens, valuables, and household goods, and were frequently passed down through generations.

Material: Oak and Iron.

Condition: Please refer to the images. Good, honest antique condition with expected wear, age‑related marks, and surface irregularities consistent with a 400‑year‑old chest. There is an age-related split to the top, albeit stable. There are traces of old worm (historic, inactive and treated as a precautionary measure). The lock plate has historically been replaced along with the supporting wooden block behind. There is a small timber fillet repair to the top right of the front board. Both end boards have been cut and re-tipped as previously mentioned.

Dimensions:

Width: 129 cm (approx. 50.8 in)

Height: 58 cm (approx. 22.8 in)

Depth: 41.5 cm (approx. 16.3 in)

A powerful piece of early English furniture — sculptural, storied, and full of presence.
