A charming but, slightly naïve, 18th century English school antique oil on canvas head and torso portrait of a young aristocratic girl.
Portrayed wearing a green silk dress and red robe; holding a bunch of grapes in her right hand and a basket of grapes in her left which are also resting upon a table.
The sitter and the artist are unknown albeit the portrait is clearly undertaken by an accomplished hand.
Presented in an associated period gilt-gesso frame.
Provenance – Sold as lot 51 in 1981 at a ‘Sotheby’s Parke Burnet’ sale, Madison Avenue, New York.
Condition – Offered for sale as found. Cleaned historically. The canvas is original and has never been relined. There are five minor patch repairs evident verso. These are not evident from the front. There is some surface craquelure but it is stable and this does not detract from the portrait which displays very well. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
Size: With the frame 93 cm x 81.3 cm (36 1/2″ x 32″) / Without frame 72.5 cm x 60 cm (28 1/2″ x 23 1/2″)
