Description
A superb set of 4 x early 17thC French antique carved oak portrait panels or terms, each depicting one of the Four Evangelists; St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke and St. John.
The Four Evangelists were disciples and authors attributed with the creation of the four Gospel accounts in The New Testament.
Each panel is large in size and offered for sale with its original paint/polychrome, the Saint standing full length, bearing the name of the Saint too and below, each is supported on a scrolled corbel-type base with foliate carving.
The panels also bear the representative symbol of each Saint; St. Matthew – a winged man; St. Mark – a winged lion; St. Luke – a winged Ox and St. John – an Eagle.
Condition – These panels are as good as they look. There is minor restoration to the top right corner of the panel relating to St. John but this has been sensitively done and there is surface wear to the paint surface to all panels commensurate with age. Please refer to the images. A further condition report is available upon request.
