Description
A rare pair of early 18thC antique carved wooden sculptures in the form of Nubian heads.
Venetian in origin.
These were once newel post finials from a staircase which is long since lost.
Each with substantial traces of original polychromy, portrayed wearing a turban, their ears pierced with earrings. Below, their torso’s are decorated with scrolls and shell-type motifs. Supported on raised gilt-gesso bases again in the Rococo style.
Whilst these may be considered of their time, these are charming beautifully-carved pieces and should be appreciated for this and their historical interest.
