Usually, knife and cutlery boxes of the 18th Century are, in the main, made from mahogany and walnut.
This example (please note that this is a single box and not a pair) is constructed from oak. A rarity. More so, the box is supported on an associated, detachable, pentagonal plinth base with raised bracket feet.
The lid is joined to the carcass by way of hinges and opens to reveal a void interior.
The external surface has acquired the most lovely signs of age.
The box is fitted with its original metalware.
Condition – There is surface wear commensurate with age. Please refer to the images. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
