Description
A rare 18th Century Dutch antique curfew.
It’s purpose was to cover the fire at night.
Of semi-circular domed form and constructed from brass, decorated with repousee work, an iron carry handle and supported on iron legs.
“Curfew” is a contraction of the original French couvre-feu, meaning literally “cover the fire”. In medieval Europe, it was common for a bell to be rung at a certain hour in the evening (often eight o’clock) indicating that all fires must be covered or put out, in order to prevent domestic fires from accidentally burning down whole villages or towns.
Condition – Good as per the images. There is evidence of some oxidation to the metal which is commensurate with age. A further detailed condition report is available upon request.
